CleanTech Alliance Seeks Curriculum Designer for Fusion Energy Instructional Modules

The CleanTech Alliance is seeking proposals from curriculum designers to build fusion energy instructional modules for Washington high school science classrooms.

Washington holds one of the largest concentrations of fusion energy companies anywhere. Helion Energy and Zap Energy are in Everett, Avalanche Energy is in Seattle with a test facility in Richland, and Kyoto Fusioneering builds fusion components in the state. These companies have raised more than $1.9 billion and are targeting commercial milestones within four years.

Fusion already appears in the state science learning standards. HS-PS1-8 asks students to model the changes in an atom's nucleus during fission, fusion, and radioactive decay. What teachers lack is classroom-ready material to teach it with.

The contractor will design up to eight instructional modules for high school chemistry and physical science, with teacher guides, background briefs, and assessments aligned to state standards. Much of the source material already exists. ITER, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, and the Fusion Industry Association all publish fusion education content free of charge. The contractor will select, adapt, and align that material for Washington classrooms, and write new content where nothing suitable exists.

The award will not exceed $65,000. Proposals are due October 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Pacific. Written questions are due September 15, and the Alliance will post answers with the RFP.
